Yesterday, June 8th, my littlest sibling, William Thomas Perkins, turned five!
It's hard to believe that the little guy, whom I first saw as a scrawny eighteen-month-old with no hair and a never-ending capacity for tears, is now a little boy--a burgeoning kindergartener! He's come such a long way from what the Russian doctors predicted. They said he would never walk--and he runs everywhere. They said he might never talk--and he's always saying he loves us. They said he would never be able to learn--and he's one of the brightest kids I know. We're so grateful for him and what he gives to us as we give to him.
So much for the philosophizing.
I have heard it said that children's birthday parties are often enjoyed more by the adults than by the children for whom the party is intended. It certainly made our day to see the little guy open his presents and hear his gasps and squeals of appreciation. Topping it all off was a fantastic farm-themed cake made by the talented baker and crafter, Abigail Perkins.

She dyed coconut green to make the 'grass', and she made the winding path to the barn with crushed chocolate graham crackers and chocolate chips. As for the fudge frosting... words could but inadequately describe the deep, velvet chocolatiness of that frosting! Anyone think that she should enter such a cake into the county fair? Comments?
Big brother Andrew gave the birthday boy a treasured piece of construction equipment!
My present. After all, what kid doesn't like a sucker like this?
Mom made William a 'Moses' costume. William is pictured attempting to part a fictitious Red Sea with his sucker!
Blowing out the candles and making his wish! The end of a perfect birthday!
Thanks to Hannah and the Pierces for all the presents! It was a fantastic start to his fifth year. Now we just have to clean up the living room debris of torn wrapping paper, plastic tags, and instruction booklets...
